On July 12 through July 15, the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts will bring over 125,000 people to Downtown State College and University Park. The Borough of State College would like to remind everyone traveling to Downtown State College for this event that the speed limit on Atherton Street from West Mitchell Avenue to West Prospect Avenue has been lowered from 35 to 25 miles per hour (mph).
The 25 mph speed limit change was enacted after the Borough of State College formally requested that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) complete a speed study along Atherton Street from West Mitchell Avenue to South Allen Street. After the study was completed, PennDOT approved the change to 25 mph from West Mitchell Avenue to West Prospect Avenue, however, the Borough will petition PennDOT to complete another speed study on South Atherton Street from West Prospect Avenue to the Borough line and hopefully lower the speed in this section. Borough Council enacted the speed limit changes on Wednesday, May 7, and the new 25 mph signs were posted on Friday, June 1.
