Residential Recycling Program
Residential Recycling in State College Borough
The Borough of State College implemented a recycling program, intended to reduce the amount solid waste presently going to the landfill. The Borough’s recycling program is carried out by the Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority located at 243 Transfer Road, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania 16823, which is located off of Route 26 near the Nittany Mall.

Their website is located at www.centrecountyrecycles.com and includes information on how to recycle everything from aluminum cans to CFL bulbs. Further information about what can and cannot be recycled is available on the Centre Region Council of Governments' recycling page through the Recycle at Home program.

All residents are required, by law, to recycle.

How Do I Begin Residential Recycling?

To begin residential recycling you must call the Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority.

Phone: (814) 238-6649; Hours: Monday - Saturday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

The CCRRA will provide you with a red recycling bin, information on what to put out for collection and the day of the week your recyclables will be collected.

On Collection Day
In State College Borough recycling is collected curbside on the same day as refuse and organics collection.

On collection day:
  • You must place your red bin at the curb.
  • All containers should be free of foreign matter.
  • Collectors will empty the bin during the day.
  • The bin should be returned to your residence that same day and stored in a place not visible form the street.

What Materials are Collected Curbside?
Materials collected include:
  • Clear, amber or green glass bottles and jars;
  • Aluminum beverage cans;
  • Bi-metal and steel food and beverage containers;
  • P.E.T. plastic soda bottles*;
  • H.D.P.E. plastic milk and water jugs*;
  • Newspaper, magazines/ catalogs, mixed office paper and corrugated cardboard (Paper items must be dry).

*Centre County Recyling & Refuse Authority accepts blow molded plastics in curbside collection. Blow-molded plastics are narrow-necked with the bottom of the container larger than the neck (e.g. soda bottles milk jugs, etc.). Injection molded plastics are now accepted at two drop-off containers. Injection molded plastics have wide necks and the bottom is either the same size as the neck or smaller (e.g. margarine tubs, yogurt containers, clamshells, etc.)

Miscellanous Plastics Drop-Off
The Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority has added MISCELLANEOUS PLASTIC CONTAINERS to its recycling program. A list of acceptable plastics is available here.

DO NOT place these plastics in your curbside bin or blue commercial recycling toters - they will not be collected in CCRRA curbside/commercial trucks due to space and operational issues.

There are currently two locations to drop-off your MISCELLANEOUS PLASTIC CONTAINERS
  1. The Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority, located at 253 Transfer Road, in Bellefonte (between the Nittany Mall and Rockview Prison, off of Route 26.) The recycling container is located outside of Gate 3, on Transfer Road.
  2. Between the Patton Township Fire Station (2598 Green Tech Drive) and ClearWater Conservancy (2555 N. Atherton St.).
