Carports & Garages

Private garages and carports are permitted as both attached and detached structures. No portion of a detached garage or carport may be used for dwelling.

Vehicle Storage Capacity

Garages and carports are limited to the following vehicle storage capacity maximums:

  • One-family dwelling: 3 vehicles (not more than one of which may be a non-passenger vehicle)
  • Two-family dwelling: 2 passenger vehicles per dwelling unit
  • Other dwelling: one per dwelling unit in the dwelling (passenger vehicles only)

Exception for attached garages on large lots in the R-1 Zoning District [§19-501.l(5)]

  • Lot area > 25,000 square feet: four-vehicle capacity.
  • Lot area > 30,000 square feet: five-vehicle capacity.

Dimensional Standards

All garages and carports are subject to the setback, height, and lot coverage standards of the applicable zoning district. Attached garages are subject to the same setbacks as a principal structure. 

Exception for detached garages in all R districts, excluding R-1 [§19-502.f(8)(h)]: 

  • Side and Rear Yard Setback: 5’ 
  • Cartway Setback: 50’ 

The door height of any garage or carport may not exceed 8’ in height.
