Gift Card Fraud

With the holiday season approaching, retail establishments and restaurants that offer gift cards are being advised of a potential fraud involving large gift card purchases.  The State College Police Department has investigated several cases where multiple gift cards are purchased totaling between $500 and $2000 using one or multiple credit cards.  These large gift card purchases are uncommon and retailers should be aware that the buyer may be using cloned credit cards with stolen credit card data to make the purchase.
Retailers should be cautious if they observe a customer with various credit cards in their possession when purchasing the gift cards. It is common for some of the cards presented by the customer be declined. If retailers encounter this type of activity and become suspicious, they should obtain as much information as possible, including physical description of the suspect(s), vehicle description, license plate number and direction of travel.
