2010 Census: 10 Questions, 10 Minutes!
2010 Census

The 2010 Census form is the shortest form in U.S. history. With only 10 questions, it takes only 10 minutes or less to complete. It’s easy; it’s safe; it’s important.

2010 Census forms were mailed earlier this month. By completing the 2010 Census, you can bring funding to CATA, roads, public libraries and more. Moreover, the census determines Congressional districts.

Census data is completely confidential. It is illegal for any census worker to share your personal information with anyone. In addition, the census is mandated by Article 1, Section 2 of the United States Constitution. It states that every person, not just citizens, is counted in the census.

Pennsylvania used to be a powerhouse in the Electoral College. However in the last 20 years, Pennsylvania has lost four members in the House of Representatives—two in 1990 and two in 2000—based on census data.

Each person who completes and returns the census brings more than $10,000 to the region he or she lives in during the next 10 years. In 2000, the return rate for State College Borough was only 67 percent. That means State College only received 67 percent of its potential funds to apply to 100 percent of the population, but it doesn't have to be this way. By completing the census and spreading the word of the importance, everyone can help make a difference.

For more information about the census, please visit www.statecollegepa.com or www.2010census.gov.

Baton Passed at Schlow Centre Region Library
Schlow Centre Region Library

On April 2, 2010, Betsy Rodgers Allen will, for the last time as Director, leave the building she has so lovingly helped to build. The next time she walks through the doors it will be as a beloved friend and library user. Ms. Allen has retired after 37 years of service to the Centre Region. Beginning in 1973 as a fresh-faced children’s librarian, Betsy has worn many hats at Schlow. In 1976, she became the Director and charged forward bringing Schlow into the electronic age with no hesitation. In 2007 she took on the role of Central Pennsylvania Library District Director expanding her reach to the entire county.

Betsy will be sorely missed by all; however she leaves the library under the excellent care of Catherine S. Alloway who will step down from her position as Public Services Director of the Dauphin County Library System to carry on the legacy of life-long learning and literacy initiatives.  Ms. Alloway has worked in Michigan, Indiana, Missouri and Pennsylvania libraries and is a past president of the Pennsylvania Library Association. She is married to Dr. Kevin Alloway, Professor of Neural and Behavioral Sciences at the PSU College of Medicine. She also has a son who is a Penn State grad and a daughter currently attending Penn State.  We are looking forward to working with Ms. Alloway and wish Betsy all the best in her future adventures.
