For Immediate Release

Signal Repair at University Drive and Easterly Parkway
A project is underway to replace the large overhead signal/streetlight mast at the University Drive and Easterly Parkway/Walnut Spring Lane intersection. The mast arm has a structural crack necessitating the need for this project. Temporary repairs were made two years ago, when the crack was first discovered, with plans to implement a long-term solution at a later date.
The primary purpose of the project is to install a new foundation and signal pole to replace the one that is structurally deficient. The new pole will be set back to allow the Borough’s contractor to widen the entrance of Walnut Spring Lane, which will allow for a realignment of the lanes. Motorists travelling east on Easterly Parkway, who want to go straight onto Walnut Spring Lane, will share the right turn lane, instead of the left turn lane. The realignment will reduce congestion in the left turn lane.
In addition to the installation of the new signal, the project will involve reconstructing about 150 feet of pavement in Easterly Parkway at the intersection. The project should be completed and all work should be done by Thanksgiving.
Easterly Parkway will be reduced to one lane and flagged during this work, but the contractor will strive to keep the Parkway open as much as possible. However there will be short periods of time when the Borough’s contractor will need to close Easterly Parkway to complete work. During closures, the detour will be as follows:
- For Easterly Parkway traffic heading east will be Garner Street, to Beaver Avenue, to High Street, to College Avenue, to the University Drive interchange, to University Drive.
- For traffic turning right onto the Parkway from University Drive will be University Drive, to Atherton Street, to Pugh Street, to Easterly Parkway.
We expect closures of the Parkway to be approximately 3 to 5 days, but the exact timeframes will be unknown until the Borough’s contractor can excavate and investigate the extent of the unsuitable foundation material which resulted in the pavement deterioration. At times, Easterly Parkway will be open but travelling on a stone subbase. Please use caution when traveling through the work zone.
