Garden & Storage Sheds

GENERAL INFORMATION

Garden or storage sheds are accessory buildings no more than 144 square feet in ground floor area (GFA) and no more than 10 feet in height.  Larger structures are not considered sheds and are subject to additional zoning and building permit requirements.

Sheds must meet the building setback requirements for accessory structures within the applicable zoning district.  If you are unsure what zoning district the property is located in, enter the address into the search bar of the Interactive Zoning Map.

SHED PERMITTING

A zoning permit is required for any shed.  If electrical service or plumbing is involved, a building permit is also required from Centre Region Code.  The permit application form is shared by the Borough and Centre Region Code Agency, so only one application is needed in any case.

The submission requirements for all sheds include:

  1. A completed zoning/building permit application.
  2. Drawings showing the dimensions of the shed, its location on the lot, and the distance from the property lines.
  3. Garden shed permit fee, as established in the annual Fee Schedule.
  4. Building permit fee (as applicable), as established in the annual Fee Schedule.

Completed applications can be emailed to Ellie Gilmore at egilmore@statecollegepa.us or mailed/dropped off at the municipal building.

REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS

All shed permit applications are reviewed by the Borough Planning Department and the Centre Region Code office when applicable.  While we strive to review applications promptly, incomplete or deficient submissions will cause delays.  Please contact the Planning Department at any time if you have questions.
